Ramadan in Oman: What Tourists Need to Know
Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims, during which locals fast, spend more time in prayer, and focus on spiritual cleansing. During this time, there are certain restrictions in the country that may affect travel. However, all conditions for a comfortable holiday have been created for tourists.
✅ Nutrition during Ramadan
In hotels, tourists can eat during the day without any problems – restaurants and cafes operate as usual. However, in public places, such as city cafes and restaurants, the serving of food and drinks during the day is suspended. It is important to take into account that local establishments open only after sunset, when iftar – the traditional meal after fasting – begins. This is a great chance to try national dishes and feel the festive atmosphere.
It is also worth remembering that supermarkets, shopping centers and grocery stores remain open from morning until late evening, so tourists can easily buy everything they need.
✅ Smoking in public places
During Ramadan, smoking is prohibited in public places in Oman, including streets, beaches, parks and shopping malls. However, hotel guests are free to smoke in designated areas on their hotel premises, called mastiqs. These areas are reserved for smokers and allow them to respect local traditions.
✅ Availability of alcohol
During Ramadan, alcoholic beverages are not served in public places. However, alcohol remains available in hotels, but usually only in certain restaurants or through room service. If tourists plan to bring alcohol with them, this is allowed - each adult is allowed to bring in up to 2 liters of strong drinks.
✅ Operation of tourist facilities and entertainment
Most attractions such as museums, nature parks and historical sites remain open, but their opening hours may be adjusted. Some traditional markets may open later or close earlier than usual. It is important to check the schedule in advance.
After sunset, Oman's cultural scene comes alive with night markets, theatre performances and festive concerts. It's a great opportunity to experience local culture and get a feel for the Ramadan atmosphere.
✅ Hospitality and respect for traditions
Oman remains one of the most hospitable countries, even during the holy month. Tourists can count on the friendliness of locals and their willingness to help if questions arise. It is important to respect traditions: do not eat, drink or smoke in public places during the day, and dress moderately.
Despite some restrictions, traveling to Oman during Ramadan can be an interesting and rich cultural experience. The main thing is to take into account the peculiarities of this month and enjoy your vacation while respecting local traditions.
